2011-2022 Hyundai Accent: anti-theft fixes and recalls by year

Last reviewed 2026-10-09 · Data: NHTSA, official settlement and manufacturer documents · Independent site, not affiliated with Hyundai, Kia or NHTSA

Short answer

The Accent's main problem in these years is theft, not engines. Turn-key 2018-2022 Accents without an immobilizer can get Hyundai's free anti-theft software (Campaign 993). 2011-2017 Accents can't take the software, so Hyundai offers a free ignition cylinder protector (Campaign 9A5) or a steering wheel lock (Campaign P32), per its May 2024 dealer bulletin. The Accent isn't on either engine settlement's class list.

Which years get which anti-theft fix

The bulletin also says Hyundai will reimburse owners of vehicles that can't take the software up to $300 for a different anti-theft device, and for a steering wheel lock (call Hyundai at the number in the bulletin).

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

  2. 22V-311 · STEERING:COLUMN

Source: NHTSA complaints and recalls APIs, pulled 2026-10-09. One complaint can name several components. The recall count is every NHTSA campaign listed for that model year, not only open ones. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.

The Accent draws few complaints compared with the other models in our guides, and they're spread across components rather than piled on the engine. 2012 and 2013 have the most. The 2019 sample is small (31), but two-thirds of those name the engine, so watch for oil use or knocking on that year.

Signs to take seriously
