2011-2019 Hyundai Sonata engine problems: what's covered and what to do
Short answer
If your 2011-2019 Sonata has the 2.4L or 2.0L turbo Theta II GDI engine, it is on the published class-vehicle list for the Theta II engine settlement. That settlement extends the warranty on the engine's short block to lifetime for vehicles owned by individual consumers, as long as the KSDS software update has been done by a Hyundai dealer. 2019 models count only if built before KSDS was added at the factory. The 1.6L turbo and the hybrids are not on this list.
Check your VIN to see recalls and which programs list your exact engine.
Which engines and years are involved
- 2011-2014 Sonata (YF): 2.4L GDI and 2.0L turbo GDI. Both Theta II. Listed.
- 2015-2019 Sonata (LF): 2.4L GDI and 2.0L turbo GDI are listed. The 1.6L turbo (Gamma) is not part of this settlement.
- Sonata Hybrid / Plug-In: not in the Theta II GDI settlement. 2011-2015 and 2016-2019 hybrids are in the separate second engine settlement (15 years / 150,000 miles; see our hybrid guide).
Your VIN's 8th character encodes the engine. Our checker decodes it with NHTSA's vPIC database; confirm against your registration or window sticker if the result matters.
What the settlement and KSDS campaign say
KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) is free dealer software that listens through the knock sensor for the vibration pattern of a worn connecting-rod bearing. If it hears it, it turns on the check-engine light and limits engine power so the car can be driven to a dealer instead of the engine failing on the road. Kia's dealer letter names the trouble code P1326 for this condition.
- Settlement: In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation (C.D. Cal.). The Hyundai settlement site says final approval and judgment were entered June 10, 2021.
- Who: 2011-2019 Sonata with genuine 2.0L or 2.4L Theta II GDI engines; for 2019, only cars built before KSDS was put into production.
- What: lifetime warranty on the short block (block, crankshaft and bearings, connecting rods and bearings, pistons) for vehicles owned by individual consumers that have completed the KSDS update. For bearing damage it applies regardless of mileage, ownership length, or prior warranty engine repairs, per the notice.
- Can be denied for: "exceptional neglect", which the notice says includes not having KSDS installed by a Hyundai dealer. Keep maintenance records.
- Deadlines: cash reimbursement claims for past repairs closed August 9, 2021. The extended warranty itself needs no claim form.
- Used / later owners: the court-filed Revised Settlement Agreement says the lifetime warranty carries over to later private owners. It does not extend to commercial owners such as dealers. Confirm on your VIN with Hyundai.
- Older recall warranty: recall 15V-568 (2011-2012 Sonatas built at Hyundai's Alabama plant) also extended the short-block warranty to 10 years / 120,000 miles for original and later owners, per NHTSA's recall record.
Engine-related recalls
15V-568 · ENGINE
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.
17V-226 · ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles. Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.
18V-934 · ENGINE
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport vehicles previously repaired under recall numbers 15V-568 and 17V-226. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, allowing fuel to leak from the pipe.
20V-121 · FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment.
22V-312 · FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time, due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

Source: NHTSA complaints API, pulled 2026-10-09. "Engine complaints" are complaints where the owner picked an ENGINE component (one complaint can list several components). Mileage is the median of mileages owners typed into their complaint text, shown only when at least 10 complaints mention one. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.
The pattern in the numbers: 2011 has by far the most complaints of any year here, and for 2015-2019 more than half of all complaints name the engine. The median mileage owners mention for engine problems is roughly 78,000-89,000 for 2011-2014. Most later years show lower numbers, but those cars are younger, so this says little about when an engine is likely to fail.
Warning signs to take seriously
- A rhythmic knocking or ticking from the engine that rises with RPM (classic rod-bearing wear).
- Check-engine light with the car going into reduced power. On KSDS-equipped cars this may be the system doing its job; get it to a dealer.
- Oil pressure warning light, or needing to add oil between changes.
- Smell of fuel or oil in the engine bay, smoke, or any sign of fire: stop, get out, call for help. Several recalls above involve fuel leaks after engine work.
What to do, step by step
- Run the free Hyundai Campaign 953 VIN check to see whether KSDS is still open on your car. If it is, book it. It's free.
- Run your VIN at NHTSA and Hyundai's open-campaign lookup for open recalls.
- If the engine is already knocking or the light is on, call a Hyundai dealer service department, give the VIN, and ask specifically whether the Theta II settlement lifetime short-block coverage or any open campaign applies, before agreeing to a paid diagnosis.
- Bring oil-change receipts if you have them.
- If you're told you're not covered and you think you are, contact the settlement administrator listed on the official settlement site.
Questions
Is my 2013 Sonata 2.4L covered for life?
It is on the published class list for the Theta II settlement, which extends the short-block warranty to lifetime for consumer-owned vehicles that have had the KSDS update. Whether a specific car is covered depends on things like KSDS status and how the failure happened, so confirm with a Hyundai dealer or the settlement administrator.
Does the 2015-2019 Sonata 1.6 turbo qualify?
Not under the Theta II settlement. That settlement lists only the 2.0L turbo and 2.4L Theta II GDI engines.
What is KSDS and is it free?
It's dealer software that detects early connecting-rod bearing wear and limits power before the engine fails. Hyundai installs it free under Product Improvement Campaign 953. It's also a condition of the settlement's lifetime short-block warranty.
Can I still get reimbursed for an engine I paid for years ago?
The settlement's reimbursement claim deadline was August 9, 2021. Ask the settlement administrator whether anything else applies to your situation.
