2011-2019 Kia Sportage engine problems: which settlement fits your engine
Short answer
The Sportage is the trickiest one. 2011-2013 Sportages with the base 2.4L engine use the MPI (port-injected) Theta II, which is listed in the second engine settlement (15 years / 150,000 miles with KSDS). The turbo 2.0L GDI (2011-2013 SX) and the 2014-2019 2.4L GDI and 2.0T GDI engines are on the Theta II GDI settlement list (lifetime short block with KSDS). The Revised Settlement Agreement and the court's final approval order list the Sportage from 2011, so a 2011 SX turbo is on the list.

Which engines and years are involved
- 2011-2013 2.4L MPI: second engine settlement (Engine II). In 2011-2013, only the 2.0L turbo is a GDI engine.
- 2011-2013 2.0L turbo GDI (SX): Theta II GDI settlement.
- 2014-2016 2.4L GDI / 2.0T GDI; 2017-2019 2.4L GDI / 2.0T GDI: Theta II GDI settlement (2019 only if built before KSDS was put into production).
- Start year: Kia's notice, the Revised Settlement Agreement and the final approval order say 2011-2018 (and certain 2019) Sportage. One Kia FAQ page says 2012; the court documents control.
What the settlement and KSDS campaign say
KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) is free dealer software that listens through the knock sensor for the vibration pattern of a worn connecting-rod bearing. If it hears it, it turns on the check-engine light and limits engine power so the car can be driven to a dealer instead of the engine failing on the road. Kia's dealer letter names the trouble code P1326 for this condition.
- GDI engines: lifetime short-block warranty under the Theta II settlement, KSDS required. PI1802 covers all 2014-2018 Sportage with 2.4 GDI or 2.0T GDI.
- MPI engines (2011-2013 2.4L): 15 years / 150,000 miles from original retail delivery for connecting-rod-bearing damage, for original and later owners, with KSDS required before the failure. The Engine II settlement received final approval in April 2024; its cash-claim deadline was July 8, 2024 and has passed, but the extended warranty continues.
- Recall 17V-224 (2011-2013 Sportage among others) covered engines with machining errors causing bearing wear.
Engine-related recalls
17V-224 · ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
Kia Motor Company (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Optima, 2012-2014 Sorento and 2011-2013 Sportage vehicles. Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.
18V-907 · FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Optima, 2012-2017 Sorento and 2011-2018 Sportage vehicles that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.
19V-101 · ENGINE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2012 Kia Sportage vehicles. The engine oil pan may leak and, if not addressed, the loss of oil may result in engine damage.
20V-750 · ENGINE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2013 Sorento, 2012-2015 Forte and Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid, 2014-2015 Soul, and 2012 Sportage vehicles. An engine compartment fire can occur while driving.

Source: NHTSA complaints API, pulled 2026-10-09. "Engine complaints" are complaints where the owner picked an ENGINE component (one complaint can list several components). Mileage is the median of mileages owners typed into their complaint text, shown only when at least 10 complaints mention one. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.
2012 and 2013 stand out: more than 80% of complaints for those years name the engine, the highest share among the models in these guides.
Warning signs to take seriously
- Knocking, loss of power, or the engine stalling while driving.
- Oil leaks under the car: recall 19V-101 covers oil-pan leaks on 2011-2012 Sportage that can lead to engine damage.
- Check-engine light with reduced power (KSDS).
What to do, step by step
- Check open recalls and campaigns by VIN at NHTSA and owners.kia.com.
- Find out which engine you have (GDI or MPI). Our checker reads it from the VIN; your registration or the engine cover may also say.
- Make sure KSDS is done. Both settlements require it before a failure.
- With symptoms, call a Kia dealer service department with the VIN and ask which engine coverage applies before paying for diagnosis.
Questions
My 2012 Sportage 2.4 isn't on the Theta II GDI list. Am I out of luck?
Not necessarily. The 2011-2013 2.4L MPI engine is listed for the second engine settlement, which offers 15 years / 150,000 miles of coverage for connecting-rod-bearing damage if KSDS was installed first. Confirm with Kia.
Is a 2011 Sportage in the Theta II GDI settlement?
The 2011 Sportage with the 2.0L turbo GDI is on the class list per the Revised Settlement Agreement and the final approval order (one Kia FAQ page says 2012, but the court documents control). The 2011 2.4L is an MPI engine, which falls under Engine II instead. Confirm with Kia using your VIN.
What's recall 19V-101?
An oil-pan leak recall for 2011-2012 Sportage. Loss of oil can lead to engine damage.
